How the math works
A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway (480 sq ft) at 3" thick = 480 × (3 ÷ 12) = 120 cu ft = 4.44 cubic yards ≈ 8.7 tons of hot-mix asphalt. With 10% waste, plan on about 9.6 tons.

Step by step
- Measure the area length and width for square footage.
- Choose a compacted thickness (2" overlay, 3–4" new).
- Multiply area × thickness in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.
- Multiply cubic yards by about 1.95 for tons, add 10% waste, and round up.
Waste allowance
Always add a waste factor: more for diagonal, herringbone, or irregular layouts and for trenches in rocky soil. It's cheaper to round up than to pay for a second delivery.
Bags vs. bulk
Bagged material is convenient for small jobs, but loose/bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per unit once you pass roughly 1–3 cubic yards. Compare the per-cubic-yard price before deciding.

How many tons of asphalt do I need?
Multiply area × thickness in feet for cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.95 for tons. A 480 sq ft driveway at 3" thick needs roughly 8.7 tons. As a quick check, 1 ton covers about 80 sq ft at 2".
How much does a cubic yard of asphalt weigh?
About 1.95 tons — roughly 3,900 lb — since hot-mix asphalt is about 145 lb per cubic foot. It's heavier than gravel or concrete bags, which is why asphalt is always priced and sold by the ton.
How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?
Around 80 sq ft at a 2" compacted thickness. At 3" a ton covers about 53 sq ft, and at 4" about 40 sq ft. Thicker lifts mean fewer square feet per ton.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
A 2" lift is typical for an overlay on a sound existing surface. New residential driveways usually get 3" of asphalt (sometimes a 2" binder plus a 1.5" top) over a 6–8" compacted stone base; heavy use calls for 4".
Can I lay asphalt myself?
Hot-mix asphalt has to be placed and compacted while it's still hot, which needs a crew and rollers, so it's almost always a paving-contractor job. Use the tonnage here to sanity-check a contractor's quote rather than to DIY.
