How the math works

A 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls: walls = (12+12+12+12) × 8 = 384 sq ft, ceiling = 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft, total 528 sq ft. With 10% waste ÷ 32 sq ft (4×8) = 19 sheets.

Step by step

  1. Measure each wall (length × ceiling height) and the ceiling (length × width).
  2. Add up the total square footage — enter walls and ceiling as separate areas.
  3. Pick a sheet size (4×8 = 32 sq ft is most common).
  4. Add 10–15% waste, divide by the sheet area, and round up.

Waste allowance

Always add a waste factor: more for diagonal, herringbone, or irregular layouts and for trenches in rocky soil. It's cheaper to round up than to pay for a second delivery.

Bags vs. bulk

Bagged material is convenient for small jobs, but loose/bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per unit once you pass roughly 1–3 cubic yards. Compare the per-cubic-yard price before deciding.

How many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room?

A 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has 384 sq ft of wall plus 144 sq ft of ceiling = 528 sq ft. Using 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance, that's about 19 sheets.

How do I calculate how much drywall I need?

Add up the wall area (perimeter × ceiling height) and the ceiling area, then divide by the sheet size — 32 sq ft for 4×8, 40 for 4×10, 48 for 4×12 — and add 10–15% for waste. Enter the walls and ceiling as separate areas above.

What size drywall sheet should I use?

4×8 is the most common and easiest to handle solo. Longer 4×10 and 4×12 sheets reduce the number of butt joints to tape on tall or long walls, giving a smoother finish, but they're heavy and usually need two people.

How much waste should I add for drywall?

Add about 10% for a simple rectangular room and 12–15% when there are lots of doors, windows, closets, and outlets to cut around. The cut-offs from openings rarely fit elsewhere, so the waste factor matters.

How many screws and how much mud do I need?

Plan on roughly 1 lb of drywall screws per 7 sheets (about 320 screws per 1,000 sq ft). For finishing, figure around one box (~3.5 gallons) of joint compound and one roll of paper tape per 7–8 sheets, plus extra for skim coats.

Do I subtract doors and windows from drywall?

For a quick estimate, no — leave them in and let the openings become part of your waste buffer. For a tighter count on a big job, measure and subtract large openings, then keep the waste factor at 10%.
