How the math works

A 200 sq ft bed at 3" deep = 50 cu ft → 25 bags of 2 cu ft mulch, or about 1.9 cubic yards. (A 2 cu ft bag covers 8 sq ft at 3".)

Step by step

  1. Measure each bed and add up the total square footage.
  2. Choose a depth: 2" to refresh, 3" standard, 4" for weed control.
  3. Multiply area × depth in feet for cubic feet.
  4. Divide by 2 for 2 cu ft bags or by 27 for cubic yards, and round up.

Waste allowance

Always add a waste factor: more for diagonal, herringbone, or irregular layouts and for trenches in rocky soil. It's cheaper to round up than to pay for a second delivery.

Bags vs. bulk

Bagged material is convenient for small jobs, but loose/bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per unit once you pass roughly 1–3 cubic yards. Compare the per-cubic-yard price before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch (27 ÷ 2 = 13.5). Above about 3 cubic yards, ordering bulk mulch is usually cheaper than buying bags.

How much mulch do I need for a 200 sq ft bed?

At a 3" depth, 200 sq ft needs 50 cubic feet of mulch — that's 25 bags of 2 cu ft, or about 1.9 cubic yards. Each 2 cu ft bag covers 8 sq ft at 3".

How deep should mulch be?

Use 2" to refresh existing mulch, 3" for most beds, and 4" for heavy weed suppression or new beds. Avoid piling mulch against stems and trunks.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?

Usually, yes — above roughly 3 cubic yards (about 40 bags) bulk delivery is more economical. Bags make sense for small beds or when you can't take a bulk drop-off.
